XP mode on windows 7 w/o Hardware Virtualization

    Post  Peppies™ on 13th February 2011, 18:48

Thats right, as the topic says, you can run windows xp virtually on windows 7. There are 2 ways of doing this, 1. with hardware virtualization and 2. without it. We today, are going to see how you can set it up without any hardware requirement or virtualization.

    How does this work?

Even if your computer doesnt have hardware virtualization, you can still install XP Mode but just cannot run it as you cant run Virtual PC.

Note: XP Mode does not work on Home Versions of Windows 7 and youll need VMware Player 3.0

There are 2 ways of using xp mode again. 1. using Microsoft virtual pc and 2. by using VMware player, which we are gonna learn how to use today.

    Getting Started

First, download and install XP Mode (link below). There is no need to download Virtual PC if your computer cannot run it, so just download the XP Mode

Install XP mode; just follow the default prompts as usual setup.

Now, download and install VMware player. The download is free, but requires registration.

You may see some prompts about installing drivers, jus let them install and restart the pc if prompted.

Now that your computer is rebooted, run VMware Player. We can import XP Mode by clicking File, then click Import Windows XP Mode VM.

VMware Player will start importing your XP Mode, Converting XP mode to VMware format may take a couple minutes depending on your hardware, so just be patient., should take not more than 5 to 7 mins.

When this is done, you should see a new virtual machine in VMware Player called XP Mode! Click Play Virtual Machine to run XP Mode. XP will run through its first-run setup process, just like a normal windows xp setup. While the xp setup runs, you might be prompted to install updates for VMware, tools, pls go ahead and do the updates as these updates integrate XP Mode into your computer.

Note: While updating, you might prompted to accept a UAC window, pls accept it and let it continue.

Now, the windows xp setup will start, just like any other windows xp setup that you have done. Accept the license agreement and select your local and keyboard settings. Enter a name for the virtual machine and an administrative password. Enter the correct, date and timezone details, however, it picks it up auto.

XP will now finalise setup and reboot. Upon restart, choose your update prefrences depending upon the frequency you want to update xp.

Note: You maybe prompted again to install drivers, please go ahead and cancel it as VMware tools has all the drivers that would be needed.

Thats it, XP mode using VMware player 3.0 has been installed.

Note: If, XP mode doesnot open itself, goto start and click on my computer and in my computer double click on a cd drive like icon VMware tools.

    Conclusion:

The real advantage of the default XP Mode in Windows 7 is that the XP programs are fully integrated with their Windows 7 counterparts. You can run them seamlessly with other programs, copy between them, and even open and save files to the same folders.
